If you're desperately looking for the No More Soda For Clarence-demotape, you better hurry over to eBay. The bidding on this item is almost over. At this very moment the price is 162,50 euro. That's about 7 euro/song.

Gazet Van Antwerpen is also the first newspaper to mention the leaking of the album. Ofcourse Tom isn't very happy with it. He was surprised the people at V2 didn't mind. The told him it creates a nice buzz.

It creates a nice buzz, Tom', kreeg ik daar te horen. Toch een beetje pervers dat een platenfirma illegaal te downloaden cd's op het net nu plots 'a nice buzz' noemt."

There's an article about Tom in Zomergasten in Gazet Van Antwerpen today.

  • He was contacted at the end of may by VPRO
  • They told him it was him or cardinal Danneels. Tom convinced VPRO to take him.
  • Tom is not a tv-watcher. He's only watched at night, unless he has drunk to much or has love sorrow.
  • He's a big fan of Zomergasten.
  • Picking the fragments was not so though. He could have filled 10 programs.
  • The thoughest part is now: the fragments are chosen and sometimes he thinks he had beter chosen something else
  • It'll be hard for him to make it to Amsterdam tomorrow. Tonight he has to dj on two places.

heet."

Indonesisch gaan eten

It's great to see where people who visit this blog come from. It's even greater if they start mailing me things they found on the internet. Like John Hope, an American dEUS-fan.

,,Here is a review I found recently of In a Bar, Under the Sea in the webzine Coke Machine Glow. They have an occasional series called "Old Favorites" where they review records that were overlooked (at least by the reviewer) when they were first released. ''

Thanks John! Hope you get to see dEUS soon in the States!

just heard pieces om Tom in Neon. Some quick notes (I will add more info and links later this weekend)

About Zomergasten

  • He picked the fragment of Lost in La Mancha because he's a fan of making offs.
  • Tom talks about a nightmare that happened to him. This is probably the leaking of the album
  • He selected Bad Timing as movie because he hasn't seen it for a long time. He saw part of it a couple of months ago on BBC. Also selected it because it's a song on Pocket Revolution
  • Two fragments of Some Kind of Monster that will certainly be shown are the part were they are talking about working from twelve to four and the part were where James Hetfield is saying to be tired of rock 'n' roll.
  • He also picked something from a documentary about Marvin Gaye to talk about Oostende, one of his favorite cities in Belgium

About the new album

  • They're thinking about the videoclip right now
  • Tom described Pocket Revolution as a eclectic album
  • Tom says Mauro has changed the dEUS-sound just a little bit.
  • 7 days, 7 weeks was recorded with the old line-up
  • Tom said Craig and Mauro are both brilliant guitarist
  • Tom confirms Stef singing on two songs (one with Radio Candip)
  • Nothing Really Ends was added to the album because it deserves a worldwide release

Technorati is a great thing. I'm following a couple of dEUS-related keywords in the blogosphere. That's how I bumped into this opinion about Tom. The guy who wrote this has never understood dEUS. Starting with the small letter in the name. He also says Tom loves pretention.

VPRO's 3voor12 has asked Tom to pick Zomergasten, in which you can see Tom's favorite tv-moments. Here we go:

  • Kings Of Convenience live in Club 3VOOR12 2004
  • Absynthe Minded live op Motel Mozaique 2004
  • Millionaire live in Club 3VOOR12 2005
  • Antony & The Johnsons live op Motel Mozaique 2005
  • Guestlove dj-set op Nu Heroes 2003
  • Tiefschwarz dj-set op 05 Days Off 2005

You can listen to the different sets on the 3voor12-site.

Not a single word on Pocket Revolution in the article though. Are they ignoring the new album or what?

Gazet Van Antwerpen has a story about Jan Bervoets, former member of Voice Male, an a cappella-group from Belgium. He formed a new group called Re-set and they even have a song of dEUS on their playlist. I mailed them to ask which one. I'll keep you posted. If you wanna check it out live: they are playing in Antwerp on August 9th (Rivierenhof) and Leuven on August 13th (Marktrock).

It's also fun to check the different V2-sites from time to time. Content is slightly different on each site.

There's nothing on dEUS on the Spanish, Australian, Canadian and American V2-site.

Belgian newspapers De Morgen, Gazet Van Antwerpen and Het Belang Van Limburg had a couple of lines about the new single yesterday. They all told the same thing.

  • You can listen to it on the Stubru-site
  • The single will be in the stores on August 26th.
  • The album will be in the stores on September 9th.

Huh? Wasn't it three days later? I remember the same thing with The Ideal Crash. Official release was scheduled for a monday too (March 15th if I'm not mistaken), but I bought the album already the friday before. Looks like it's a normal thing in the recording industry. They call it the street date.

There's more info on the fragments Tom has chosen for Zomergasten next sunday. Tom picked footage from:

  • the documentary Lost in La Mancha (about the attempt of Terry Gilliam to make a movie from Cervantes' Don Quichot)
  • the rockumentary Some Kind Of Monster (about Metallica)
  • the historic soccer game between The Netherlands and Belgium in 1985 (Belgium scored in the last 5 minutes and qualified for the World Cup in Mexico, The Netherlands had to stay home)
  • Belgian King Baudoin
  • Captain Beefheart
  • Marvin Gaye
  • Paul Cascoigne
  • Jean-Luc Godard

According to Knack Magazine Tom picked a fragment from Some Kind Of Monster because it was recognizable. Tom says it's an honour for him to be the fifth Belgian Zomergast.

And as you already know VPRO screens a movie afterwards that is chosen by the Zomergast afterwards. Tom has selected Bad Timing.

Someone told me there was interesting info for this blog on the website of Café D'Anvers, a club in Antwerp where dEUS did the video for Instant Street (and where Millionaire also recorded a videoclip a couple of weeks ago).

The webshop of Café D'Anvers still sells t-shirts from the Designers Against Aids-project from 2004. T-shirts were designed by people like Dirk Bikkembergs, Buscemi and Tom Barman (the one you see in this post) and are available in a male and female version.

Proceeds of the sale will go to the aids research department of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, so you know it'll be money well spent.

BTW: this year's edition features designs by Faithless, The Cardigans and Robert Smith. Danny & Els from Vive La Fête are 'the faces' of the campaign in Belgium. More on www.designersagainstaids.com.

It's a strange thing that French media as Les Inrocks and Oui FM are already making fuzz around 7 Days, 7 Weeks while it remains quiet on Flemish radiostation Studio Brussel. So why not start the fuzz ourselves and vote 7 Days, 7 Weeks all the way to the top of De Afrekening, the chart of the listeners of Stubru. You can cast your vote here.

A quick how-to for the non-Dutchspeakers:

  • Click here for the form.
  • At the first three lines write your personal top 3 (artist and title). Be sure it contains the new dEUS-single ;-)
  • Further down you have to put your last name, first name, e-mailadres, phonenumber, street, zipcode, the place where you live and your age.

You can download De Afrekening here (or subscribe to the podcast). De Afrekening is broadcasted every wednesday afternoon from 14.00 hours to 16.00 hours.

7 Days, 7 Weeks will hit the stores August 29th.

Did dEUS release different versions of their early demo's too? Someone downloaded No More Soda For Clarence and only found five songs on it. Mute wasn't there. That suits with the info on Deadbeattown. But Jyves's site has six songs. And so has the demo-tape that is currently on eBay. So? Nothing special? Maybe, but it's weird that Quinten got a copy from the original tape and it didn't have Mute on it.

According to the first part of the Cucamonga-series about dEUS, No More Soda For Clarence had 4 homerecordings and two tracks that were recorded with Peter Vermeersch en Pierre Vervloesem.

As most of you already know Tom is nominated (with 110 other people) for De Grootste Belg. The 10 finalists will be announced on october 24th. In the meantime, the organisation asks everyone to write songs (covers or original work) about the nominated people.

Eager to write a song about Tom? Deadline is september 15th. More info at webredactie@degrootstebelg.be. Didn't find any info on the De Grootste Belg-website.

Here's Tom talking about his nomination and here's the article I wrote for De Standaard.

I was browsing the Radio 1-website this morning and I discovered this little interview with Tom from june 3rd about the new album. Nice and it's got some info that wasn't in the interview with Stubru the same day.

  • There will be a concert against Vlaams Belang in october 2006 (local elections in Antwerp).
  • The 3 shows in the AB are not the only one in Belgium. We can expect the guys at some festivals. And maybe there will be an extra clubconcert in spring.

And if you're on the Radio 1-site, don't forget you can still listen to the Cucamonga-series about dEUS or hear Tom talk about his nomination for De Grootste Belg.

Danny Mommens will do a sax-solo on (the B-side of) Cyber Polaroid, the comeback-single of eightiesband The Bollock Brothers. The single was recorded with Luc Van Acker and will also contain a cover of Beats Of Love by Nacht Und Nebel. A couple of years ago Vive La Fête did a cover of Horror Movies (a song by The Bollock Brothers) on the Nuit Blanche-single.

For those of you who want to hear Danny messing up Beats Of Love on the sax: Cyber Polaroid will hit the stores in august, followed by a full album. 2 Many DJ's will do some remixes.

dEUS-link: Jock Mc Donald once was a guest backstage at one of the dEUS-shows in Londen when Tom told him he was into The Bollock Brothers for a long time.

Filip Eyckmans, formerly known as one of the guys from Musickness and the boss of En Frente Arte (the hotel and recordingstudio in Ronda where The Ideal Crash was recorded) has introduced a new sport.

It's called bossabal and you can get to know it on one of the following summerfestivals. According to Johnny (Eyckmans is the Johnny of Jack&Johnny Recordings, the 'label' on which the very first version of Zea and A Beatband's Jintro Travels The World In A Skirt were released) it's the missing link between Ronaldinho and Cirque du Soleil.

Update: The inspiration for the new sport has a dEUS-link. Filip saw a couple of capoeira-artists doing crazy stuff on a beach in Brazil when dEUS was there. Anyone got a clue which year that should have been?

Jyves discovered a weird change in If You Don't Get What You Want. The lyrics of the song that was released last summer go like this:

"If I don't get what I want
If I don't get what I need
If I don't get what I ask for
I'll just let it be
That's the difference
between you and me"

The version on Pocket Revolution goes like this:

"If I don't get what I want
If I don't get what I need
If I don't get what I ask for
I won't let it be
There is no difference
Between you and me"

According to Funkyphil on the ISR-community Include Me Out also has a film reference.

The phrase "Gentlemen, include me out" is attributed to the film producer Samuel Goldwyn who is famous for his unintentionally witty comments (which were actually a result of his sometimes poor English, Goldwyn was a Polish immigrant originally).

Oor: Antwerpen: Hechte vriendenclub of Has been?

This weeks Humo has an interview with Connie Palmen. She will host Zomergasten, the tv-show that welcomes Tom Barman on July 31st. She tells the list of fragments Tom has chosen is fantastic. She and Tom have the some favourite movie: The Elephant Man by David Lynch. VPRO wasn't allowed to broadcast it, so Tom picked Bad Timing, as I told you earlier today.

Palmen didn't know Tom very well. She met him once at an anniversary party for Hugo Claus. She likes the way Tom sings, but dislikes the wall of sound a lot of dEUS-songs end with.

Besides Stef singing on two songs there seems to be another link between Zita Swoon and Pocket Revolution. Radio Candip, the backgroundchoir on A song about a Girls, is doing backing vocals on Pocket Revolution (the song).

In last week's Humo Stef Kamil Carlens told that he discovered them on Rolands version of Ca Plane Pour Moi. Leonie seems to be the girlfriend of Mirko Banovic, who plays the bass with Arno and was also on A song about a Girls.

As most of you already know Tom Barman will be in the Dutch tv-show Zomergasten on July 31st. After a three hour interview, VPRO screens a movie that is chosen by the interviewee. Apparently (according to this site and the tv-schedule in Humo) Tom has picked Bad Timing, a movie by Nicolas Roeg with Art Garfunkel and Harvey Keitel.

Has Pocket Revolution more of these links? There was a book-link with What We Talk About (When We Talk About Love) and now it looks like we have a movie-link for Bad Timing.

The dvd is available at Amazon.

Jyves saw CJ Bolland last saturday on the Dour-festival and as he is the webmaster of the Magnus-website he was able to talk to him about the new dEUS-record. Main things to remember:

  • there will be a CJ Bolland-remix of Stop/Start Nature
  • after the dEUS-tour he and Tom will work on a second Magnus-album.

On Saturday I met CJ Bolland, he'd come to see Front 242, his favourite band ever. He didn't know yet about the Pocket Revolution leak ("I hope Tom doesn't know, he'll get completely mad") and was very surprised that it was there so soon. So I asked him about the album, and he told me that producing Pocket Revolution was the hardest thing he's ever done. As I suspected, there's Magnus material in there: Stop/Start Nature ("That's me and Tom!") which he will remix, and What We Talk About.

CJ says that spending 5 months with the band was very, very difficult and rewarding ("You have to manage those guys... I was a producer and a shrink") and those days were the most sleepless of his life ("We were in the studio every day from 11 in the morning to 5 the next morning, and on some days I had to take the plane in the evening for a DJ set somewhere in the world, and came back the day after and into the studio again"). He absolutely loved doing it, but he's glad that he can finally finish his own new album, and then he wants to get back with Tom for a second Magnus album when dEUS are done touring.

Back in the late nineties there's wasn't such a great thing as an official dEUS-website (that came only with the release of The Ideal Crash) or the ISR-community in it's current form. How did we keep up with our favorite band then? Well, there was a great and very active mailinglist. The list died back in 1999, came back a couple of times, but went down for good in 2003.

Here's a new attempt.

And now the dEUS-related part that I forgot to mention earlier on. Stef Kamil Carlens sings on two songs of Pocket Revolution. Let's hear it from Jyves:

Arthur revealed a couple of things about Pocket Revolution:

  • Danny plays bass on 4 songs of Pocket Revolution
  • The new version of If you don't get what you want features Tim Vanhamel
  • The leaked version is not the one that will hit the stores in september. There are a couple of slight differences.

Apparently the cover-artwork of Pocket Revolution is taken from the comic-series Storm by Don Lawrence. You can see it in part 20, called The Von Neumann-machine on page 19.

According to the Goformusic-newsletter 7 days, 7 weeks will be the first single of Pocket Revolution. Nothing is mentioned about the release date of the single.

New dEUS-items on eBay:

at 21:37 posted by Bart Van Belle 3 Comments

It appears the new dEUS-album has been leaked exactly two months before the official release. It should be out there somewhere.

I have mixed feelings about it: as a fan it's off course great to have the possibility to listen to an album you've been waiting for six years.

On the other hand it shows the weakness of the recording industry. They send advance copy's almost two months before the release and then ofcourse there will be one rotten apple who will throw the thing on a peer-to-peer-network. This kind of things happen with all bands. Shouldn't they first try to catch the people (from within the music industry!!) who distribute the albums instead of the people who download them?

Let's all hope the person responsible for this is catched and this whole thing will not influence record sales too much. But on the other hand, Tom said a while ago he wasn't too worried about record sales. And maybe it's a good thing after all: maybe the record company can add some stuff to the album: a poster, a bonus track, ...

The Extrazone-recordstores in Belgium are doing a special for the 175th anniversary of Belgium. They're giving reductions on a bunch of Belgian cd's and dvd's. Amongst the items are the No More Loud Music-compilation (10.99 euros) and the Any Way The Wind Blows-dvd (13.99 euros). You can find a list of stores on the Extrazone-website.

Waldar mailed me today. Apparently he also got an advance copy of Pocket Revolution too. That's probably why he posted the tracklist with playing times earlier on.

Here's what he has to say about the album.

Arthur on the album launch event I mentioned earlier:

,,I can't confirm or deny if dEUS will perform in London that day, but please don't get your hopes up of getting tickets for any such event. I you really want to see the band in the Autumn, I wouldn't put all my horses on that one date if I were you, just to avoid any disappointment of not getting tickets..."

By the way: tickets for the Manchester gig (06/11) are on sale through NME, from the Manchester Academy-website or on Ticketonline.co.uk.

Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad has an article with 7 reasons to visit Antwerp. The 7th reason (the open and internationally oriented mentality of Antwerp) comes with a nice quote from Tom.

Translation: Antwerp is not only a city, it's a country, a continent and a state of mind.

Update: Here's the article (registration required) from the New York Times about Antwerp that inspired Het Nieuwsblad

Although Stef Kamil Carlens sings on a couple of songs on the new album, it's not very likely he will be a guest at one of the forthcoming dEUS-gigs. Zita Swoon is also touring in september and october.

Hopefully they can fix something later on.

Lara Orsal, a 28-year-old parisienne and journalist has apparently received a copy of the new dEUS-album. She says Pocket Revolution is much better than the other dEUS-albums.

It looks like we've got a shortage of French dEUS-fans on The I Suffer Rock Community: a French webzine already mentioned Pocket Revolution as the title of the new album in the beginning of may.

Funny one. Gazet van Antwerpen has an interview with American actress Chelsea Handler about her book My Horizontal Life - A Collection of One-Night Stands.

In the end they showed her some pics of Belgian guys like Tom Boonen, Koen De Bouw, Koen Wauters, Jan Decleir,.... Stef-Kamil Carlens is also in the list. According to Chelsea Handler Stef looks too intense for a one night stand. She doesn't want anyone who talks all night.

"Lijkt me een muzikant, klopt dat? Zijn haar is te lang voor me. Ik kan het niet hebben dat er behalve mij nog iemand de hele voormiddag de badkamer nodig heeft. Hij lijkt me zeer intens. Te intens. Ik bedoel dat ik denk dat hij veel vragen stelt. Ik hoef niet iemand die de hele nacht praat in plaats van tot actie over te gaan."
Chelsea's favorites are Tom Boonen (,,Adress?") and Koen De Bouw (,,I'll book him for two nights'')

Bad news for the people who bought tickets for the 'try-out'-gig in Patronaat, Haarlem on september 8th. This will not be the first dEUS-show of the tour. dEUS plays the Kalsart Overground Festival in Palermo (Italy) on the 3rd of september.

Arthur gave more info on Pocket Revolution today.

  • The total playing time of the album is 61:17.
  • Nothing Really Ends will be a bonus track
  • The front cover artwork is by Don Lawrence, one of the best British comic strip artists (known for example for Storm).
  • Wheels, a song which was one of the revelations during the 2004 autumn tour, will be a b-side.
  • Sun Ra will feature vocals by Stef-Kamil Carlens (and Stef will be a guest on a few other songs).
  • Craig and Danny are also on the album (since some pieces were record before the "big bang" in october last year.

And the official site has two new band-pictures by Alex Salinas.

And I found this on a German site: the playing time of each song.

  1. bad timing (7:07)
  2. 7 days, 7 weeks (3:53)
  3. start stop nature (4:28)
  4. if you don't get what you want (3:49)
  5. what we talk about (4:44)
  6. include me out (5:02)
  7. pocket revolution (6:01)
  8. nightshopping (4:03)
  9. cold sun of circumstance (5:44)
  10. the real sugar (3:58)
  11. sun ra (6:43)
  12. nothing really ends (5:35)

The new dEUS-album will be called Pocket Revolution. The artwork is slightly different from the one that was published on deus.be at the beginning of june.

Pocket Revolution is scheduled for release on september 12th and will contain two songs that have previously been released.

Nothing Really Ends was released as a single at the end of 2001 and was also a 'bonus' track on the No More Loud Music-compilation.

Last summer dEUS released If You Don't Get What You Want as an internet-download. Both songs were reworked and re-recorded for Pocket Revolution.

This is the tracklist of the new album.

  1. Bad Timing
  2. 7 days, 7 weeks
  3. Stop-Start Nature
  4. If you don't get what you want
  5. What we talk about (when we talk about love)
  6. Include me out
  7. Pocket Revolution
  8. Nightshopping
  9. Cold Sun of Circumstance
  10. The Real Sugar
  11. Sun Ra
  12. Nothing Really Ends

Flemish newspaper De Standaard asked Tom if he was willing to pay for digital television. The answer is no. ,,Television is gods way of telling me i'm wasting my time."

Flemish newspaper De Morgen has asked 10 Belgian artists how it feels to play on the Werchter festival. Tom tells playing on Werchter has never been a dream for him. He's not into festivals. He only went to Werchter once (as a visitor that is) and slept all day. For dEUS, playing on Werchter was just another gig during the tour.

dEUS played Werchter four times (1994, 1995, 1997, 2002). Last year Tom also played Werchter with Magnus.
