Nele Scheers has sent me the following mail.

Was reading an interview with Manu Riche in 'De Morgen' on Saturday. (Remember the documentary about the previous Belgian king that Tom Barman chose when he appeared on 'Zomergasten'? It was made by Manu Riche.) Came across this interesting bit:

Apparently Manu Riche is working on a documentary about Tom Barman.

A three part-video-interview with Tom from the Chatshow Network.

In Part 1 Sarah discusses Tom’s home-city of Antwerp, famous for fashion and Rubens. Tom is the only original member of dEUS and Sarah asks him how he manages to keep the essence of dEUS going with it’s changing band members. They discuss his favourite audiences and how he sees his music.

Part 2 is where Tom educates us on the pronunciation of the name ’dEUS’. Next they talk about
the new album, Pocket revolution, and dEUS’ new direction. dEUS has some pretty famous fans as well, REM and Radiohead being amongst them.

In Part 3, Tom talks about touring England, Ireland and Scotland and how they keep on schedule
and keep changing the set list. He can’t remember all the songs he’s ever recorded – a sign of a good time I think. Sarah and Tom talk Belgium, contemporary dance(!) and rock. Check out Cheesy Dips to find out which possession Tom couldn’t possibly live without.

Two gigs in The Netherlands have been rescheduled because Tom lost his voice. Tom already had problems with his voice on tuesday. Too many after-party's? You'd think so, if you read the Focus Knack tour-report.

Yesterday's concert at Tivoli, Utrecht will take place next sunday (23/10), while tonight's gig at De Oosterpoort, Groningen has been rescheduled to next monday (24/10). Tuesday's gig at Paradiso is not to be rescheduled. Tickets remain valid or can be returned. More on dEUS.be.

Yesterday's concert was even better than the one on tuesday. I had high expectations: it was the last night in Belgium, they should have had a great day (you don't sell out Vorst every day) and StuBru was gonna broadcast one hour live (and Tom doesn't like crappy live-recordings on the radio).

They played the same songs as tuesday, just shuffled a bit with the order. Great crowd this time. I was standing a bit further away than tuesday, but around me everyone was going completely mad. Thé highlight was Suds & Soda which made the AB go crazy. One of the best versions I've ever witnessed. And of course it was great to see Tim Vanhamel and Mauro doing a guitar-duel in If You Don't Get What You Want. And Theme From Turnpike is still a fucking great song.

Tom's voice sounded still tired and they didn't play everything perfect. Stop Start Nature and Bad Timing weren't as good as tuesday and I personally think that a song as Assault on dEUS is great on the Magnus-album, but it couldn't convince me live. They started 7 days, 7 weeks but started it all over again after a few seconds.

And of course: it's the economy, baby. If people want to give 60 euros for one ticket, there's no problem. But i really wouldn't give that much money for a concert-ticket. De Morgen has a big article on dEUS playing Vorst today.

  • For the band playing Vorst is the last challenge they have in Belgium. Tom says they will probably play the Zenith in Paris also. (It's a concert hall comparable with Vorst, I've seen Pearl Jam there a couple of years ago)
  • Yo Van Saet from Clear Channel expects the concert in Vorst will also sell out because PR is a great album with a big commercial impact
  • Kurt Overbergh (AB) labels dEUS as world class: they could sell out the AB twenty times, but they keep their fans hungry by playing only a few concerts in Belgium
  • Dirk Van der Auwera (Universal) repeats dEUS is their most important act for the past and coming months. They did a lot of marketing: posters, listening sessions, ...

Studio Brussel had phonecalls with CJ Bolland and Tom yesterday before the AB-show. You can listen them here. I also added the mp3's to the podcast-channel.

  • CJ's favorite live track is Bad Timing
  • He saw them 7 or 8 times during this tour. He's going to the AB on wednesday or thursday
  • Tom was not nervous for the concert although expectations were high
  • Playing in Vorst was a logical step. They're considering playing in such big halls in other countries too
  • He already told Pocket Revolution would be the opener of the concert

There's also a special forum on the dEUS-concerts.

Two words to describe yesterdays' AB-show: great gig! It's too early to call it the best dEUS-show I've ever seen, but it's definitely in my top 5. They started at 20.30 hours and played for about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
No big suprises. The setlist was comparable to other gigs during this tour. The played mainly the new album and a couple of classics.
It was the first time I saw the new line-up live (yeah, I missed the Mezz-concerts last years due to illness) and I must say: it's probably the best live line-up. Mauro was cool, doing nice backing vocals on Instant Street for example and Alan was more inspired then Danny (for example in Fell Off The Floor, Man).
They looked a bit nervous in the beginning and they had some troubles with the sound (Tom's voice from time to time drowned in the wall of sound).
One surprise: they did play 7 days, 7 weeks (something they skipped during previous concerts). Tom apologised for his voice (tired, he said) and that's probably the reason why they didn't cross the line of a two hour concert.
The only thing I'm disappointed about was the lack of enthusiasm from the crowd. There was some cheering in between the songs, but there's were almost no people dancing or so. There was a small pitt during Suds & Soda, but that's all.

Here's the setlist

Studio Brussel had a short phone conversation with Tom very very early this morning (in Lille). They rang him because Anyway the wind blows will be shown on Flemish television tonight.
You can listen to the conversation (in Dutch of course) by replaying Wim Oosterlinck's show from this morning and skipping ahead to 1:13:18. If you want to hear it, you'll have to do it today!

Main news I think is that he only plans to release his next movie in about 5 years, as he first wants to tour and release more records with dEUS!

It looks dEUS will tour again in March. During the concert in Nantes, Tom told they'll be back in France in that month.

De Standaard, De Morgen and Le Soir had reviews of the Olympia concert yesterday. They were all blown away. According to Le Soir Millionaire doesn't play the support, because PiaS didn't want to pay the tour.
