A quick report of the interview with Christian Pierre and Bob Savenberg in Knack.

  • Christian is happy about the success of the tour
  • Musickness were a bunch of cowboy: they combined arrogance with risctaking investments
  • As a manager you need affinity with the music your artists make
  • It's the 10th dEUS line-up and every line-up had its problems.
  • They only lose money on the gigs in the USA. V2 USA gave too little support
  • Image is everything: covers, pics, ...
  • Some marketingcompany wanted to use Bad Timing for an Aids-campaign. They refused because the song would lose it's original meaning. They offered Nothing Really Ends instead, because it contains hope, but it was rejected by the advertiser

Knack also published a powerlist of the Belgian musicscene. Here's the top-3:

  1. Herman Schueremans (Live Nation, Rock Werchter)
  2. dEUS
  3. Koen & Kris Wauters (Clouseau)

There's also a list of the best-selling Belgian artists of 2005. Laura Lynn tops the list (82.000 cd's) before dEUS and Belle Perez.

There's a double-interview with dEUS-manager Christian and Bob Savenberg (manager of Belgian popstar Nathalia) in Knack this week. I will report about it later today.

According to Studio Brussel Bad Timing will be the next single. They don't mention if it will be released as a cd or just as a radio only-single like The Real Sugar.

Focus Knack also has an item about tourmanagers. It features Ton Maessen, the guy who is currently doing tour management for dEUS and Steven Zwaenepoel, Ton's assistent. Really worth a read.

Tom has compiled his dreamfestival for Focus Knack. Here's the line-up.

14.00h: Tool
15.00h: Nick Cave solo
16.00h: Pixies

18.00h: Don en Neneh Cherry
19.00h: JJ Cale

Tom will deejay this saturday (June 17th) at Vertpop in Bozar, Brussels

(thx to Stephan)

There will also be gigs against intolerance in Brussels and Ghent on October 1st, one week before the local elections in Belgium.

  • Arno and Marie Daulne (Zap Mama) are setting things up for a gig on the Brouckèreplein in Brussels. They have already invited Adamo.
  • Keremos, the management from Sioen and Absynthe Minded, is doing the same thing in Ghent. Headliner there will probably be Gabriel Rios.
  • dEUS is headlining in Antwerp. There's still doubt about the Sint-Jansplein, since it's probably too small.

Line-ups will be announced in the beginning of July. Tom will announce it in Werchter, Arno will do it in Brussels (Couleur Café)

Found a description of the Lynch Mob-remixes on the Rough Trade-site. You can order the 10" there as well.

'sun ra' by deus gets the remix treatment by brendan lynch (aka lynch mob) - on one side he takes the track on a spaced out cosmic journey with huge sounding kraut rock drums and wild keyboard work whilst the flip is equally as spaced out but in dub form. these two mixes are can only be found on this 10" and only 500 copies were pressed.

Elsewhere on the Rough Trade-site the 10" is also mentioned. Apparently the releasedate was May 19th.

More about the upcoming remix-album: it will be a mini dub/remix-album. This site says the following about the Sun Ra 10": Limited edition 10" sampler from the forthcoming Deus dub / remix mini album. Includes the 'Lynchmob Dub' on the B-side. You can hear a snippet of the Lynch Mob-remix here. And you can buy the 10" here.

More from the Vrij Nederland-interview: (click here to read the 1st part)

  • Frank Vercruysse, one of the actors from Any Way The Wind Blows, told Tom there's an older feeling in everything Tom does, but he brings it in a younger, enthusiastic way.
  • Tom agrees. It's probably because he grew up between older people. His father was 63 when he was born. A lot of his friends are older too.
  • He thinks his mental age is 45.
  • Duality young - old is also in dEUS-gigs: no nonsense-rock in Suds & Soda and a paranoid atmosphere in Bad Timing
  • He likes to make complex music and live without complexed. Mauro describes it as Linking decadence to discipline
  • Time Out Chicago described dEUS as ,former next big thing'.
  • It hurts Tom because dEUS will never sell 20 million records. They've sold 150.000 from Pocket Revolution so far, so it will probably be their best selling album.
  • He hates it when people ask him 'How come you're not bigger?'
  • Tour will end on October 1st in Antwerp and they will immediately start working on a new album
  • He's proud about the good relation between dEUS and The Netherlands
  • About the gig in Antwerp against intolerance: the message is "we don't need intolerance over here", but they will bring it with positive vibes: no speeches, no left wing thingies
  • Apparently they're having some problems with the location. Local authorities are not very supporting.

Some short words by Tom about Pinkpop and the festivalseason on the 3voor12-website.

  • They didn't rehearse last week: they played 140 gigs the last months, so everybody knows what to do by now
  • They played with Happy Mondays on Saturday: it reminded him how a festival should be: no nonsense, a party
  • 3rd Pinkpop: first two Pinkpop-gigs with dEUS were bad. He's more a Lowlands-guy.
  • Last week he worked on a new Magnus-track.
  • He started playing squash again. He played in competition until he was 18. Then he started smoking and gained interested in girls
  • They will play 30 festivals until the end of July. Festivals are fun if the weather is great
  • He never was a festivalfreak. He went to Werchter one time. To sell shoarma.

Forgot to mention that in last week's Humo Tom talked about his three favorite off the radar-records.

  1. Pre-millennium Tension (Tricky) Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension
'A pure sex-album'. Tricky is one of the most underestimated songwriters of the nineties
  2. Ege Bamyasi (Can)
Tom discovered Can late. This is his favorite album.
  3. Brilliant Trees (David Sylvian) David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees
Tom would like to have John Hassel as the producer for the next album

De Morgen has a small interview with VJ Ann about the Ann Tour with dEUS (broadcast today at 16.30h at TMF).

  • TMF followed dEUS in Italy and Poland
  • They started in Treviso (where dEUS played football and Mauro injured his arm)
  • Apparently Mauro got back from hospital only 5 minutes before showtime
  • About dEUS-groupies: in Poland it looked like the local lesbian footballclub was after Tom
  • Fans in Poland were top: they sung along each song and most of them had seen Anyway The Wind Blows
