A nice present from dEUS on the official podcast: Tom and Mauro playing The Architect unplugged.
Tom interviewed about the tour, the new videoclip and the new album. He says they're planning to finish and release the new album in 2009. And he hopes to continue touring as well since the album is released in Australia and Japan. And they're gonna do some festivals also next summer....
Tom went to see the boxfight of Sugar Jackson vs Carlos Baldomir last weekend. He was interviewed shortly in this tv-item. Tom says he respects athletes a lot because they have to be at their best during the game. If they have a bad day, they lose. According to Tom it's not that bad to have a bad day on stage, because you can always hide it.

Dutch band De Staat, who supported dEUS in the UK last october, did a cover of The Architect during the VPRO Song of the year 2008. Click here to listen to it.

I just did some updates on the tour-overview page and I noticed we're missing quite a lot of setlists. If anyone can add one or more setlists that would be great. Check this page to find out what we're missing and drop me a line with your feedback.
I know it's difficult to compare gigs, but since I saw dEUS 10 times the last months, I decided to make my personal top-10 of dEUS-gigs this year.

The music is repetitive and as the voices don’t ever really show any edge, pitch or change in tempo it’s all a little bit too repetitive. The second stage of the song, can be slightly reminiscent of earlier Coldplay; musically it’s not too bad, however it is nowhere near as good, and their lyrics are not worthy of noting.
Two more reviews of The Vanishing Of Maria Schneider
No doubt the most interesting thing about this tribute to the apparent disappearance of French actress Maria Schneider (who famously bared more than British audiences were used to in `Last Tango in Paris`) is the placing of one Guy Garvey behind the backing vocals mic. The third single from dEUS` fifth album is a hark back to the big-chorused, fuzzy-guitar of Big Star and should please all fans of the Belgian act famed for inappropriate capitalisation.
Oh boy. They sure did save the best for last. Great sound, great crowd, great gig. I was standing front row right before Klaas. What a difference compared to wednesday when I was sitting somewhere in the back.
The first part of setlist was mainly the same as on wednesday. The big difference was the fact they skipped Let's See Who Goes Down First during the regular set and immediately jumped from Bad Timing to If You Don't Get What You Want, followed by Suds & Soda. Since Bad Timing is a real crowd pleaser, they could easily stretch the vibe. Wednesday they more or less broke it by playing a rather calm and less known song. And I shouldn't tell you the extactic crowd reaction during Instant Street.
They kicked of the encores with Magdalena. It felt so good to hear that song again after all those years. I don't like the new version of Little Arithmetics without the outro. They probably leave it out to make the fade in to Oh Your God smoother, but it just doesn't fit well. The first part of the encores ended with Serpentine.
They came back a second time. I was thinking they would only play Roses, but they started with Let's See Who Goes Down First. And Roses was a brilliant ending of another brilliant gig.
RTBF broadcasted an item on the making of The Ideal Crash. You can listen to it on the podcast.

On January 19, Belgian singer Axelle Red will release a new album called "Sisters & Empathy". That's her first record in English (she usually sings in French). The record will feature a duet with Tom Barman, and Mauro Pawlowski also contributes guitar parts.
It's not the first time Axelle and Tom sing together: back in 2000, Axelle joined Tom on stage at the Dranouter Festival, where they sang Serpentine. That performance was later released as a bonus track to Axelle Red's best-of album.
Tom Barman also directed Axelle Red's video for her 1995 single "Le Monde tourne mal".

A quick review of the first Vorst-night. Although it was my nineth dEUS-gig this year, I was really looking forward to the first night in Vorst. I have great memories of the previous dEUS-gigs in Vorst (March 2006) and I was hoping it would even be better this time.
Compared to other gigs I saw in Vorst, the sound was ok during most of the songs. And they more or less played the same set as in Tilburg (they only added Serpentine). No suprises, no special guests, just a super sharp gig with brilliant versions of Instant Street, Bad Timing and Roses as my personal highlights.
There was also a small lightshow, really sober, but very nice. The only thing I was missing were big screens. We were sitting in the back and it's a shame most of the people were missing close ups of the band and Mauro's coolness.
It's also strange to see that the audience will only go crazy on the oldies. Ok, it wasn't a very young audience, but reaction on The Architect was very lame. Still this gig was one of the best I saw this year. And there's even more tonight....
A new episode of the official podcast is available. It's about the tour in Luxembourg and The Netherlands.

There's a small interview with Tom on the Le Soir-website. Tom says it's normal the crowd reacts more on Instant Street than on The Architect. Songs need some time to install them in the public's mind.
They are planning to record a new album in 2009 and they also want to do some gigs in places they've never been before.
Just before Tom gets on stage he lights another cigarette.

Next thursday there will be an afterparty at Recyclart in Brussels. It's invitation only, but Recyclart is giving away 50*2 tickets over here. Just send an e-mail to info@reclyclart.be with the subject-line JE VEUX ETRE TOM BARMAN.
As the Vantage Point-tour is nearly over, I grabbed my chance to go and check out dEUS in a regular venue before the grand apotheose in Vorst Nationaal later this week. It was the first time I went to 013 in Tilburg and the venue is really cool: the stage is wide, the room has an arena-feeling due to the stairs and there's a nice balcony. I bet everybody had a great view on the stage.
We arrived around eight o' clock, just in time to catch Expatriate. The Australians did a great job as a support act. Not that impressive as The Blackbox Revelation during the spring-tour, but nice enough to get in the right mood.
dEUS came on stage around nine o'clock. The first part of the gig was more or less the same that during the Amsterdam-gigs. I saw the first Amsterdam-gig on the internet and noticed that things have changed a lot since the last time I saw dEUS in July this year on Rock Werchter.
It's obvious that the band now has almost total control on the live-aspect of the Vantage Point-songs. And it's great that a couple of oldies have made it to the setlist again. It's so nice to hear Everybody's weird or Let's See Who Goes Down First again. And Little Arithmetics and Morticiachair during the encores. They also played Eternal Woman, but without Lies Lorquet. Alan did Lies' lines. No Serpentine or Magdalena, but let's hope they keep that one for Vorst (on both nights please ;-)).
Two funny moments: when Tom was hit by his guitar while changing guitars before Instant Street, he asked for a tissue. Somebody threw a sac of paper tissues on stage. Tom said thank you and Mauro asked if somebody had a christmas tree. And Klaas made a mistake during one of the violin-bridges of Morticiachair. Instead of Drop the phone Mauro sang Drop the song...
Tilburg was nice. Tilburg was great. And I bet Vorst will even be greater.

A new episode of the official podcast has been published. It's all about the gigs in France. One of the videos contains footage where the band is jamming with Alan on drums and Tom on the bass.
dEUS will perform during the anniversary show of Dutch radioshow NightLiveXS next sunday at 013 in Tilburg. The band will do an interview and a short session. More info here and here. The show will be broadcasted on Kxradio.nl.
Just noticed that the dEUS-page on the Belgian iTunes Music Store has been redesigned.
Apparently, another single has been released today. A promo-single of The Vanishing of Maria Schneider has popped up on eBay, but this review more or less indicates it will be a regular single (in the UK only).
If anyone finds a better version of the artwork, please drop me a line.
The review:
This is no bad thing – avant garde Belgium rock isn’t everyone’s cup of tea – but new single The Vanishing of Maria Schneider might see them reach a broader audience, on the back of a guest vocal from Elbow’s man-of-the-moment, Guy Garvey.
A gorgeous dream-pop melody, courtesy of Garvey and dEUS frontman Tom Barman flirts with a gently nudging bassline as warm and fuzzy guitars drift pleasantly out of focus.
Fabchannel will broadcast the dEUS-gig at Paradiso, Amsterdam next wednesday.
